DAVID BEGLEY'S CHARCOAL ANIMATIONS

Throughout his animated films, shimmering figures move between dark and light, haunting flickering worlds of water, breath, forests and fire where nothing is permanent and all things transform. These are meditative works which speak of birth, life, death and rebirth and its ever moving cycle.

David makes his charcoal from driftwood collected at beaches in Ireland and Wales. Before beginning an animation, there is no storyboard, script or narrative. A sheet of paper is stapled to the studio wall and to this a first layer of char is added, rubbed smooth, drawn into, erased, scrubbed and drawn into again until finally an image in the drawing arises. David begins to adjust this image, photographing each image as it evolves. Thousands of adjustments are made in each drawing, creating transformations of light, dark and form which when placed in a timeline appear to move. Photographing this process in daylight and at night causes shifting exposures, which when animated create a flickering light throughout his films. In the process of making the films, drawings are destroyed or become part of a new composition, so that all that remains at the end of each animation or ‘scene’ is a singular drawing. David writes and records the soundtracks for these films by combining elemental sounds of sea, fire, wind, human breath and birdsong with piano scores written whilst on residencies at The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Co Monaghan.

In 2015 David exhibited a solo exhibition of animations entitled 'BREATHE' at Linenhall Arts Centre and Wexford Arts Centre. These exhibitions featured drawings by David and his animations 'Breathe', 'Seed' and 'Be'.
