LARGE DRAWINGS BY DAVID BEGLEY [2013 - 2014]
These drawings began with a series of five drawings made in April 2013 at The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Co Monaghan. The first of these works 'The pursuit of elevation' was inspired by a work of fiction [Bone Black] David had begun writing in January 2013. This drawing with its motifs of feathers, beak, mask, wings and mirror led to three works which followed, all informed by an interest in Theatre and the construction of narrative within drawing, painting, film and theatre. Themes of reflection, escapism, vanity, narcissism overlap in the drawings 'Pursuit of adoration,' 'Facing the large glass' and 'The pursuit of elevation'.

Whilst making the large drawing 'Grief', David documented the drawing in stages, as each layer evolved. Seeing these adjustments at a later date viewed as a time lapse, further inspired David to animate his drawings. The drawing was followed by the animation 'Momento' made in January 2014. David was awarded a three month studio residency at The RHA, Dublin and continued this series of large drawings. 'The Familiar', 'The Feeder', 'The Scavenger,' and 'Mandorla' were made at The RHA. These drawings were informed by figure drawings carried out at The RHA and continue the artist's exploration of subject in dramatic / reflective space.
